What's your pleasure, grapefruit or orange?

Have you ever dreamed of owning a bar and restaurant? It can be one of the most challenging adventures of your life! I call it an “adventure” because my husband and I did own a bar and the experience was like traversing through a jungle.  Imagine fighting off the island natives while trying to survive the elements of sun, wind, rain, and mosquitos! Well, maybe not that adventurous but there were times we felt like we were on an island by ourselves trying to make it through the maze called entrepreneurship!  Every change of season and inclement weather event proved to be a roller coaster ride of highs and lows in the cash register drawer.  When we look back on those five years, we wouldn’t change the decision to open as it was an experience that taught us valuable lessons about business, people, and our marriage. We made countless friendships, and fantastic memories all while making a positive contribution to our community. For that we will be forever grateful!  Along the way we won awards for our food and drink from votes received by our dedicated customers far and near.  We are proud of the accomplishment and look back on this time in our life as part of the journey we were meant to be on.

“Have you ever dreamed of owning a bar and restaurant? It can be one of the most challenging adventures of your life!”

If you are at all familiar with Maryland and the beach area, you may have heard about a lovely little cocktail affectionately known by us locals as a “Crush”. Made with fresh fruit, it is one of the most refreshing libations for summer.  It amazes me that when we travel to the islands, or close by to the Florida area, that no one serves these!! We make it our business to educate the bar keeps about this little gem.  We have even thought about starting a business going around to all the Caribbean and setting up tiki bars with the supplies needed to serve a “Crush”.  (Pipe dream- but what a life, huh?!).  Lucky for you, I am providing all the goodies you will need to enjoy this East-coastal favorite from the comfort of your own backyard tiki bar! So here we go----

If you do not have a “crusher” just use a hand juicer.  You can also find an industrial juicer from Warring, or any restaurant supply company.  Amazon sells them as well Here  We found our homemaker version at an antique store in Morehead City, North Carolina.  It was a fantastic find and we used it during our entire vacation that year!

Ruby Red Grapefruit Crush

Load up a 16 oz shaker glass with ice

½ Ruby Red Grapefruit “Crushed” or juiced – pour this goodness into the shaker or glass

Pour a “3 count” of Smirnoff Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka (3 count is barkeep lingo – you can measure 1 ½ ounces if you feel the need to be exact)

Splash of Triple Sec

Fill the glass with Sprite (you can use soda water as well if you want the skinny version)

Shake, shake, shake and be prepared to swoon! Garnish with a grapefruit wedge. Voila! Deliciousness!

If you are not a fan of grapefruit, don’t fret my child. There are other versions of our beloved Crush.  The most popular is the Orange Crush – just replace the ½ grapefruit with a whole orange juiced and switch to Smirnoff Orange Vodka. Curated and made popular by a little bar in West Ocean City called Harborside Bar and Grill.  It’s an absolute must visit if you are ever in the area.  Situated on the water, you will get lost in the afternoon drinking these “nutritious” (c’mon, there’s fresh fruit!) cocktails and listening to one  of the many acoustic acts playing daily.  If you ever stop by, tell them Robyne from TheCoastalCrush.com sent ya – they will have no idea what you’re talking about! LOLOLOL

And with that, I’m wishing you love, grace, and salt air in your hair!
